We Were the Lucky Ones
by Georgia Hunter
A moving story based on the author’s family during World War II. Set in Poland, where only 10% of the Jewish population survived the Holocaust, it follows the Kurc family’s five siblings and their separate yet intertwined struggles to survive and reunite. After reading it, I learned that one of my friend’s parents was also part of that 10%. They met in a relocation camp after the war, having each lost their entire families except one sibling. While the book tells the story of those who survived, it’s hard to imagine the brutal devastation for the others who didn’t. It leaves you questioning: what have we learned?
